Acupuncture is used to treat and relieve pain. When needles are inserted into specific points, known as acupuncture points, impulses are sent through thin veins from the treated area to the spinal cord and to the brain. It will stimulate the production of various substances, such as endorphins, the body's own morphine, which helps to reduce pain. It also increases blood circulation in the tissue where the needles sit. After acupuncture treatment it feels like the muscles are very relaxed.
Example when acupuncture works well is when you have muscle pains, pain associated with rheumatologic diseases, migraine, pain during childbirth and back pain during pregnancy. Acupuncture is often used in combination with other treatments, such as physical therapy.
How to treat with acupuncture needles
The needles are placed on different acupuncture points on the body. Normally you will use five to twelve needles per treatment. The needles may be left on the body for 20 to 30 minutes and repeat the treatment two to three times per week. The result is seen after repeated treatments. The effect can be assessed at the earliest, after about five treatments.
After acupuncture treatment
You may feel thirsty and get a bit tired after treatment. It is good if you drink water and rest afterwards.
